Chapter Twelve

They finally battled their way back into the rushing stream of traffic. Hurrying back to the office took fifteen minutes. As soon as they arrived, Elijah sat and scribbled down Cassandra’s words, always grateful for his excellent memory.

“Do ya think her first kill really was her old man?” Sanchez stood with her hands on her hips, looking doubtful.

Elijah nodded. “It had the ring of truth. And do you see now what I meant about her sounding tired?”

“Yup. She started out the way I expected, and then she sounded…lost and angry, I guess. Like a kid.”

“Exactly. It might be simple fatigue, or it could be declining mental status. It’s too early to tell.”

They took time to check the taxicab and rideshare companies to see if someone fitting their suspect’s description had paid a driver for either drop off or pickup at the club. No dice. He knew she wouldn’t make it that easy for them, but they couldn’t afford to miss any of the necessary steps. Had she used her own car if she had one or walked? He made a note to check security cameras on the surrounding neighborhood businesses. He would bet she walked.

As they were discussing how to proceed, they were called into their lieutenant’s office for a briefing. “You’re certain it’s the same woman?” he asked. “This young man seems like a complete contrast to her other victims.”

“Yes, sir.” He told him about the latest phone call and their conclusions.

“And she’s not just taking credit for the crime?”

“No, sir. In our opinion, it’s definitely one of hers.”

He nodded, looking resigned. “The boy’s parents are on the way here. They’re friends of the mayor, and he requested that we speak with them personally. Can you stay and inform them of the basic details? They are…understandably distraught.”

Although it sounded like an invitation, Elijah knew better.

When the parents arrived, he understood immediately why their young victim had turned out so badly. The father, dressed in a five-thousand-dollar designer suit, stormed in the door, letting it crash against the wall, leaving his wife to trail behind. “I demand to know who is responsible for this travesty!”

His lieutenant, always soothing in the face of drama, tried to persuade him to take a seat. “I’ll sit when I’m damn well ready to sit.” Pacing back and forth in between them, he asked, “And who the hell are these two morons?” He stabbed an arm in their direction.

Introductions were made, but it failed to calm him. “So, these are the two losers who failed to stop this murderous bitch before now?”

Apparently, even friends of the mayor had to be taught basic manners. “Mr. Riverton. I understand this is a difficult time for both you and your wife, but you need to take a seat and calm down.” His boss locked eyes with the other man and motioned to the nearby seats.

He yanked a chair over and sat, eyes glaring. His subdued wife sat next to him, slumping and teary, making no effort to touch or console him.
